Is a Dog Walking Job Right For You?
There are many ways that you can make some extra money in your spare time whether you want to supplement a full time job, or if you are a student and want something that you can do when you are not in class during the day. Some types of part time jobs are more flexible than others, and some are not for everyone. Dog walking is one way you can make some money, have some flexibility to your hours, and also a way to spend more time outdoors if that is what you love. You have to figure out if you are cut out for a dog walking job before you start.
People will always have pets on matter what the economy, but fewer are going to pay someone to walk their dog when money is tight. However, there are always going to be job walking opportunities in almost any community, town, or neighborhood. Dog walking can be a great job for a teenager, college student, or for an adult that loves animals. If you live in a neighborhood that may have questionable people out at night, only take jobs walking dogs during the day if you feel safe doing so.
You are right for dog walking jobs if you love dogs, and also if you understand that part of walking them is giving them an opportunity to use the restroom, so to speak. Most areas have strict laws about cleaning up after your pets. That means you have to pick up after any and all pets that you walk. There are bags made just for this, but some people still get squeamish about this chore. Dog walking is not the right choice for you if you can not do this. You and the pet owners could get into trouble if you are caught leaving the goodies behind.
Dog walking sometimes includes walking them for exercise as well as for bathroom issues. Some dogs are large and it takes a lot of strength to contain them. They may be pretty well behaved, but you never know what will happen if they spy a squirrel that tickles their fancy. Be sure you have the upper body strength to handle big dogs or don’t do this, or limit your business to small dogs only. Some owners like you to also feed and give water to the dogs when you return them to their home, especially if they are at work all day and can not do it themselves. This part of dog walking is common, and can mean more pay.
There is a downside to dog walking. There are strict leash laws in most areas. If there were to be a problem, like a dog were to get away from you and then it bites someone, you could be in some trouble. This is not a common problem as long as those in dog walking insist that only good natured and well trained dogs are ones that they accept, and that the owners have the appropriate insurance. If you are walking dogs and there seems to be one that you are having a hard time controlling, do yourself a favor and tell them that the dog is just too much for you. There will be other clients out there that will need your services.
